Women's Equality Day 2020

Women's Equality Day is a day commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. It is proclaimed each year by the United States President since 1971 in which a resolution was passed in Congress designating August 26 each year as Women's Equality Day.

It is hard to believe that not so long ago (about 100 years) women were treated as second-class citizens without the full rights and privileges which were available to men. Even despite unequal rights and discrimination the history remembers many great women, politicians, scientists, activists and artists.

Women's Equality Day is a great opportunity for organizations such as Womankind Worldwide and Equality Now to continue work on providing women across the globe with equal rights and opportunities to education and employment. A lot of attention is also made to eliminate the suppression, discrimination, and violence against women which, even in the 21st century, is of enormous proportions. At least 1 in 3 women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex or abused in her lifetime (General Assembly. In-Depth Study on All Forms of Violence against Women: Report of the Secretary General, 2006. A/61/122/Add.1. 6 July 2006).
